How does it work?
Your stomach size is reduced to about 60cc in volume, which results in stomach restriction and weight loss. You will feel satisfied after eating relatively lesser food than before because you will feel less hungry and feel satisfied quickly. Slowly and gradually, your hunger mechanism is also altered, so that you can maintain your weight loss for a longer time. This happens because a substance called Ghrelin, which is responsible for hunger, is produced lesser after surgery. This is why; Laparoscopic Sleeve is considered a popular option for obesity.
Most importantly, it preserves the pylorus, the valve that is responsible for emptying the stomach. This acts as a natural band and allows food to remain in the stomach for a longer time, making the person feel full even when the food is slowly moving out of the system. Also because the bowels are not rearranged, the normal hunger satisfaction mechanism is enhanced.
Is this surgical obesity procedure safe?
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is the only bariatric operation that does not cause mal absorption. It also doesn’t lead to any issues like foreign body which is quite substantial in lap band surgeries. This surgery is low risk as compared to duodenal switch and RNY surgeries, so you are at low risk of needing another operation in the future. As stated earlier, the bowel is not rearranged, so even the problem of dumping and marginal ulcers does not arise. Compared to laparoscopic gastric banding procedure, this surgery is much better and safer.
How does the actual operation take place?
It takes about an hour to perform the Sleeve Gastrectomy operation. The doctor makes small incisions on your stomach, using a small tube to size the sleeve so that the diameter if the resulting stomach pouch is perfect. The stomach is restricted by stapling it and dividing it in a vertical manner and removing more than 85% of it. This part of the procedure is irreversible. The remaining is shaped like a very slim banana and measures differently depending on the surgeon performing the operation. You may check on the video below for the working behind this procedure:
How much weight can I lose with this obesity surgery?
The weight loss with the Sleeve Gastrectomy is somewhere in the range of 55% to 80% of the excess body weight, depending on your body type, metabolism, diet and lifestyle. You lose weight purely because of gastric restriction. It has been seen that this surgical operation shows better weight loss results than the Lap Banding surgery.
If you are young and otherwise healthy, follow the weight loss program dedicatedly and exercise regularly, you can lose much more weight than mentioned above. With that kind of lifestyle you can lose as much weight as with RNY or the Duodenal Switch.
